Chiefs claim stunning Super Bowl win over 49ers in overtime to go back-to-back (2024)

Patrick Mahomes has led the Kansas City Chiefs to a second-straight Super Bowl win and third in the last five years with a stunning come-from-behind overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers.

Mahomes found Mecole Hardman with a three-yard pass with just three seconds remaining in overtime to claim a 25-22 victory in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs are the first team since the 2005 New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

For the second year in a row, the Chiefs trailed by 10 points in the match, and were behind in overtime after Jake Moody kicked a 27-yard field goal.

But Mahomes, who was named Super Bowl MVP for the third time, led a 75-yard, 14-play drive to secure the victory that included an eight-yard run on fourth down and a 19-yard run further down the drive.

A misfiring offence and uncharacteristic errors contributed to the 49ers going into half time with a 10-3 lead.

Travis Kelce, watched on by girlfriend Taylor Swift, only had one reception for a single yard in the first half — his only real contribution to an error-strewn half from the defending champs being to angrily bump his 65-year-old coach Andy Reid when kept on the sideline for a play that resulted in the Chiefs turning the ball over.

The Niners led through a 55-yard field goal from Moody — at that stage the longest field goal in Super Bowl history — before a trick play in the second quarter saw Jauan Jennings throw toChristian McCaffrey for a 21-yard score.

Harrison Butker kicked a field goal either side of the half time break, the first 28-yarder, the second a record-breaking 57-yarder, to make it a four-point game.

The Chiefs needed a huge slice of luck to get on the board, when a Tom Townsend punt hit the foot of Niners playerRay-Ray McCloud III, withDarrell Luter Jr unable to recover the now live ball allowing Chiefs player Jaylen Watson to dive on it.

Mahomes needed just one play to find Marquez Valdes-Scantling for the 16-yard touchdown.

The Niners responded when Brock Purdy found Jennings for a 10-yard touchdown to retake the lead, but crucially Moody saw his extra point attempt blocked.

Butker kicked two field goals either side of a 53-yard Moody effort to send the game to overtime, when the Chiefs finally went to work.

Chiefs claim stunning Super Bowl win over 49ers in overtime to go back-to-back (3)

What a day, what a game!

No doubt the celebrations for the Chiefs will be going long and hard in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs made history, as the first back-to-back champions in 19 years (since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots).

Congratulations to Kansas City, commiserations to San Francisco — and to Aussie punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who played a blinder keeping the Chiefs pinned with his top kicking game but came up short.

How are we going to top this next year! And who will follow Usher as the half-time entertainment?

From myself, Andrew McGarry, and Mawunyo Gbogbo, thank you for joining us on the blog, and have a good afternoon!

Super Bowl LVIII - the highlights

By Andrew McGarry

What a Super Bowl — was there enough drama and big moments for you?

From Travis Kelce losing it on the sideline after a key turnover, to the trick play from the 49ers that gave them a 10-point lead, or Jake Moody's missed extra point for the 49ers, there was PLENTY going on.

Patrick Mahomes is talking

By Andrew McGarry

Chiefs claim stunning Super Bowl win over 49ers in overtime to go back-to-back (4)

He is talking on the post-game show, and he has one word to describe it all.

"Surreal. It's just surreal right now, I don't think it's sunk in yet," he said.

"The season we had this year, to be Super Bowl champions, it's surreal.

"I think we just kept fighting (in the fourth quarter and overtime). The guys continued to battle ... that's been our entire season."

Spare a thought for the 49ers

That was one hell of a game, and one hell of a finish.

Yet again, San Francisco ends up on the wrong side of things.

They won their first five Super Bowls, but since beating San Diego 49-26 29 years ago, they have now lost three straight times when they got to the big game.

For 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, it's a bitter bit of deja vu, after his team gave up a lead to lose to Kansas City four years ago. He was also involved with the Atlanta Falcons when they gave up a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LII to lose in overtime to New England.

Where to from here?

Who knows. This will burn for the 49ers, but the time is ticking on Brock Purdy's rookie contract. Sooner or later they will have to pay him more than $US870,000 ($1.3 million) a year - and then they will have to make some HARD salary cap decisions.

Patrick Mahomes wins the Super Bowl MVP for the third time

By Andrew McGarry

We can't really be surprised — there were times there where it looked like all that was keeping Kansas City in the game was Mahomes' willpower.

But when it counted, the Chiefs number 15 got it done once again. Four Super Bowls, three wins, three MVPs.

NFL great — sure. It wasn't really in question before now, but he is going for rarefied air now, as only one of five to win the Super Bowl three times. As we said earlier, he's just 28, so watch out the rest of the league.

Travis Kelce lets loose on the Super Bowl stage

By Andrew McGarry

Travis Kelce is in LOUD mode up there.

He screams out a version of "Viva Las Vegas", and then points to a possible "three-peat".

"The goal has always been three, but to do that we had to win two. And to have that target on our back … we've done it!"

No mention of another kind of ring for Taylor Swift, by the way.

Andy Reid not talking about his future

By Andrew McGarry

Reid is smiling widely — as you would — at winning his third Super Bowl.

Asked about his future or his legacy, he says he doesn't know about that.

"Chiefs fans, 1-2-3, how about those ..."

The crowd roars "Chiefs!!!!!!!!!"

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt takes the trophy

By Andrew McGarry

Hunt says it has been an "amazing five-year run".

"I wanted to thank the Lord giving us this opportunity.

"I think about my parents (original owners Lamar and Norma Hunt) and how proud they would have been."

Denver Broncos great John Elway brings out the Vince Lombardi Trophy

By Andrew McGarry

John Elway won two Super Bowls as Denver quarterback ... it's fitting that he is bringing out the Vince Lombardi Trophy to the Kansas City Chiefs for a win orchestrated by another great quarterback.

Overtime done a bit different

By Andrew McGarry

Is overtime golden point?

- Craig

Craig,

The overtime rules have changed a couple of times.

It used to be that if the team that had the ball first scored a touchdown they won regardless.

Now the rules say that both sides have at least one chance to score.

Since the Niners scored a field goal, Kansas City could tie it with a field goal, or win it with a touchdown.

If they had kicked a field goal (with only seconds left), we would have gone to another overtime period, and it would have been first score wins.

Chiefs' Reid cements top-five coaching status

By Andrew McGarry

There have been rumours coach Andy Reid might retire if Kansas City won here.

Regardless, this win just cements his place in NFL coaching history. He joins San Francisco's Bill Walsh and Washington Redskins' Joe Gibbs with three Super Bowl wins.

Reid now trails only Chuck Noll, who won four times in six years with Pittsburgh, and of course Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls with New England (and Tom Brady).

All up, between his time with the Chiefs and his previous stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, he has led teams to 11 conference championship games and five Super Bowls. That's one hell of a record.

  • Bill Belichick — New England Patriots — 6 wins
  • Chuck Noll — Pittsburgh Steelers — 4 wins
  • Andy Reid - Kansas City Chiefs - 3 wins
  • Bill Walsh — San Francisco 49ers — 3 wins
  • Joe Gibbs — Washington Redskins — 3 wins

Patrick Mahomes the quarterback of his generation with a third win

By Andrew McGarry

There it is, a third Super Bowl win for Patrick Lavon Mahomes II.

A reminder that this amazing player is just 28 years old, and he has just played in his fourth Super Bowl for his third victory.

So far, Mahomes has been a starting quarterback for Kansas City for six seasons — he and his team have at least got to the AFC Championship game every single time.

A look at the table below shows he still has a long way to go to reach the Olympian heights of Tom Brady (seven wins), but if the Chiefs get to another four Super Bowls in the next five or six years, he is a realistic chance of getting there.

Oh yes, another reminder — Brady won two of his seven Super Bowls AFTER he turned 40.

Who is going to stop him? Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens? Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills? Will the Niners be able to get the better of him the third (or fourth, or fifth) time of asking? Will Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers start another dynasty?

Right now, you’d back Mahomes and the Chiefs against them all.

The only question here is how long Chiefs coach Andy Reid goes for.

Quarterbacks - most wins

  • Tom Brady - New England Patriots / Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 7
  • Terry Bradshaw - Pittsburgh Steelers - 4
  • Joe Montana - San Francisco 49ers - 4
  • Troy Aikman - Dallas Cowboys - 3
  • Patrick Mahomes - Kansas City Chiefs - 3
  • Bart Starr - Green Bay Packers - 2
  • Bob Griese - Miami Dolphins - 2
  • Roger Staubach - Dallas Cowboys - 2
  • Jim Plunkett - LA / Oakland Raiders - 2
  • John Elway - Denver Broncos - 2
  • Ben Roethlisberger - Pittsburgh Steelers - 2
  • Peyton Manning - Indianapolis Colts / Denver Broncos - 2
  • Eli Manning - New York Giants - 2

Kansas City with the ball in overtime

By Andrew McGarry

They start with a straight run from Pacheco for three yards.

2nd and 7 from the 28.

Mahomes made a short pass to Rashee Rice for six yards, and then Pacheco is stopped!!

It's 4th and 1 - this is the game here!!!!!!!

Is this a pass, or do they try the Mahomes version of the sneak/ "tush push"?

They get it!

The Chiefs try and pass on first down, but Marques Valdes-Scantling runs backward to try and get free, and he loses three yards!

Mahomes goes to the same receiver, and they pick up seven yards, but it's 3rd and 6.

Great play! Mahomes throws it to Rashee Rice running away on the right, and he goes clear for 13 yards and a first down!

A dump pass to Pacheco, and he grabs four yards to the SF 34.

They are within field goal range for Harrison Butker, but you KNOW they want to finish this here.

What a classic play from Mahomes!! He scrambles up the middle for 14 yards, and the Chiefs are knocking on the door at the 18 yard line.

Isiah Pacheco gets three yards.

Mahomes dumps it to Kelce, and he stomps to the three-yard line for a first down. He flat out refused to go down.

And Jake Moody gets it done!

He slots it from 27 yards, and now Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs can win it with a touchdown, or tie it with a field goal.

We have 7:22 left in the first overtime period!

Moody blasts it into row Z, and Kansas City will start from their 25.

San Francisco get the ball to start overtime

By Andrew McGarry

It's a touchback off the kickoff, and the Niners will start at the 25.

Purdy goes back to the pass, he forces it in there - and it comes off Deebo Samuel's fingers and is NEARLY intercepted.

Breathe, people, breathe ...

And now it's a false start from the Niners. 2nd and 15! Yikes.

That time it was wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Now it's the craziest-looking shovel pass of all time from Purdy ... it's 3rd and 13.

Here we go.

Purdy is looking frantically for something, his pass is batted away. Looks like a punt - but there's a FLAG! defensive holding. 5 yards, and a first down!

That could have been the game there!

They go back to basics, and McCaffrey runs the ball outside for three yards.

They're only on the 30. McCaffrey again for five, but the headline is George Kittle going to the locker room looking like he's done.

Purdy goes back, and gets one to Brandon Aiyuk, who bobbles it but catches it for the first down!

They're out to the SF 46.

They call McCaffrey's name again, and he gets four. It's tough yards here.

They are at halfway.

Purdy goes out to McCaffrey, who gets past the tackle and goes downfield for 24 yards! The Niners are down to the KC 26. McCaffrey finally broke one...

Now they give it to him again, and it's eight yards.

Down to the 18. And why not again - they get the first down - but there's a holding penalty. It's 2nd and 12 from the 28, but at least Kittle is back out there.

Purdy has to run wide ... and he gets the pass off - great catch from Juszczyk for the first down.

I don't know where McCaffrey is getting the energy here, but he's just gone for another six yards. 2nd and 4 at the 9.

He goes again, but is stopped at the 9 again.

Purdy has to throw it away!

Fourth down!
