How to Thaw Shrimp

Thawing shrimp out can be tricky, but we are going to show you how to thaw your shrimp quickly and efficiently.

Place these in a colander in your sink and rinse them with cold water. You don’t want to thaw these out with hot water, because this will begin the cooking process for the shrimp. So keep that water cold!

This will take about 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure to evenly coat your shrimp with the water and move them around so they all thaw. The time they take to thaw also will depend on the size of your shrimp. These are 16/20 shrimp, which are going to be larger than the usual 21/25 or 61/80 shrimp. If you’re wondering what those numbers mean, it's how many shrimp you’re getting per pound. So, depending on the size you’ll get 16 to 20 per pound, or 21 to 25 per pound.

The best way to thaw shrimp is in the fridge overnight. You don’t want them out of the fridge overnight because if they get too warm this can cause them to go bad before you even cook them. Microwaving the shrimp to thaw them is also not an ideal process. The microwave can harbor bacteria to build up on the shrimp, and it can start to cook them which you don’t want either. These could spoil both out of the fridge overnight, or from microwaving them.

To check where your shrimp are at in the thawing process, press them together between your fingers and bend them. If they are pliable and bend easily, and there is no ice left on them, they are properly thawed. If you find they don’t bend very easily, and ice is still formed on them, then they need more time.

Can you leave these out for too long, or under the water for too long? Yes, if you leave these under the water for too long, they’ll actually start to cook or spoil. Once all the shrimp seem properly thawed, you can cook them right away, or place them in the fridge until you’re ready to cook them.

If they aren’t in the fridge, then they should be over ice. So, keep them nice and cold until you're ready to use it. This should not only ensure that all your shrimp is thawed properly, but that it's safe to eat too. Best practices are going to be the most helpful when thawing and cooking shrimp.
