While dark chocolate is usually vegan-friendly, milk and white chocolate typically are not. Milk Chocolate, as the name implies, contains dairy, making it not vegan, unless it is made with a nondairy milk like oat milk or almond milk. White Chocolate also frequently contains dairy products.

Some manufacturers may add ingredients like skimmed milk powder, anhydrous milk solids, milk fat, milk emulsifiers and other dairy products to their dark chocolate – those following a vegan lifestyle should look out for these ingredients on the label.

Pure cocoa powder, cocoa nibs, and 100% chocolate bars are safe options for vegans since none of the above are made with milk or sugar.

Most white chocolate is not vegan, as it typically contains milk or milk-derived ingredients. However, it is possible to find vegan white chocolate (although I'm not convinced how great it tastes) made with plant-based alternatives to dairy.

Chocolate itself comes from a plant and is therefore suitable for vegetarians and vegans. However, during the production process some additives or ingredients that are not suitable for these types of diets can be added to chocolate-based products.
