The accompanying article discusses attempts with other sorts of pickles, kosher dills for instance, but the article poo-poos this, indicating the bread-and-butter is the only way to go. Not so!
I grew up with a version of this, handed down by my grandmother. If you can locate Heinz Genuine Dills, try this sandwich (sans butter) with them. The sourness of the pickles offsets the peanut butter perfectly. Kosher dills, Polish dills, etc. don't cut it -- only the Heinz.

Ginny

Dills are my favorite. PB and P are a favorite of Kinsey Millhone, a gumshoe from Sue Grafton mysteries.

My variation on this dish is even simpler - gluten and pickle free too ;)Take one jar of crunchy peanut butter and a spoon somewhere private and eat as much peanut butter as you'd like. Uniterrupted. You're done when you're done.Dont over do it ;)Bon apetit x

Both my husband and I have eaten PB&P sandwiches since childhood, but we have been arguing about whether they are better with bread & butter pickles or dills. For years, now, I have argued bread & butter over his howls of dill superiority. I feel vindicated by this article/recipe. Conversely, he is feeling backed up by the dill pickle's defenders in the these comments. So, I guess we are right back where we started--each with our own favorite PB&P sandwich.

Oh good lord, I thought I made this one up myself years ago! Peanut butter and pickle relish works nicely, too. But really, what is relish if not "jelly" made from cucumbers? Thus, bread & butter pickles are just really chunky jam. That's what I've always told myself anyway...

Sarah

My father has made this for years (and years) - always with his favorite - gherkins. He even did it with crepes! just spread the peanut butter and roll it up with pickles. Sometimes he adds potato chips for more crunch and more salt.

gigi

have never liked peanut butter w/ anything sweet, and have always eaten peanut butter w/ dill pickles. longtime favorite is skippy chunky w/ claussen kosher dills, on hearty white toast, or toasted english muffins.

Ann Kirby McGill

Dill. Only dill.

Doug

Never tried this but I’m dying to try it now!I do love a basic buttered white bread sandwich filled with shredded sharp cheese and bitter English marmalade, so this doesn’t seem too crazy by comparison.

I've been eating these my whole life thinking I was all alone in my bizarre gustatorial preferences and that I was just plain weird. Now I know I am not alone and that there are other weird people like me - weird!

Don't forget to add a little ketchup.

AnneC

I made this with DILL pickle slices and it's just as delicious. Toasting the bread adds a nice crunch!

Had them my whole life but for the best sandwich you have to take whole dill pickles NOT bread and butter and slice them thinly on the long side so you have 3-4 long strips. Yum! If you don't make your own pickles, Claussen chill dills (get the whole pickles not spears) are the next best.

Kathy

Some people do not believe this sandwich exists. I wonder how they would react to other combos: sliced green olives with pimento, bacon, potato chips.

Aileen Hock

This sandwich is a favorite of mine. Over the years I have tried various combinations. My favorite is peanut or almond butter on one side of the bread and cheddar, jalapeno spread on the other with pickle slices in between.

Molly

We were teased about what weird ingredients were in our school lunch when my Dad “invented” the peanut butter and butter pickle sandwich, enhanced by a thick slice of yellow cheddar “for protein”. The Times presenting this made me laugh.

My friends thought I was crazy for eating this childhood staple. And dill. Only dill.

Hi. I have been eating peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches for over 47 years, and my new favorite version is on Costco’s Innkeepers Huckleberry Bread toasted, then generously smeared with chunky peanut butter and Claussen Kosher Dill sandwich slices. When I can’t get Innkeepers Huckleberry bread, I use Franz blueberry or huckleberry bread. People laugh and make fun of me until they eat it. Try it & you just might have a new favorite treat!

Letty

I was raised on this sandwich and still eat it regularly. We only ever ate it with dill pickles - the more the better!

Ruth

Adding sriracha mayo really makes the sandwich sing!

Judith

I like to use sweet pickles or sweet pickle relish, even easier!

Linda S.

It may be that one needs to acquire this taste as a child, as I did from my father, but don't dismiss it out of hand. This is a go-to fave for me. Dill slices work well too.

Lance

I was on a tour in Iceland a few years back and we were served PB & salami sandwiches one day. I attest that PB & pickle is way better.

Laura

Maybe the dill versus sweet pickle debate depends on the peanut butter. Processed PB like Skippy and Jif are sweet and might pair well with the salty sour dill pickle. Natural peanut butter, no sugar added, might do better with sweeter pickles.Personally I can’t stand Skippy, etc, but maybe with the dill pickle it would be palatable.

Substituted almond butter. Used baby dill pickles from Costco. Used a toasted English muffin. Used recipe amts that suited me. Tasted great!

Holly B

Sliced cornichons, Skippy Natural, rye toast 🙂

Lucy

I thought I made this up! I’ve been eating peanut butter, dill pickles, and sharp cheddar cheese on whole wheat bread for ages! Those were always the ingredients left over in the pantry and fridge when I lived with roommates in collage. Deliciousness!!

gordon

Peanut butter, cornichons and a drizzle of sriracha on toasted bread is my favorite.

Christine Rooney

I have loved chunky peanut butter with sharp cheddar cheese on whole wheat bread. When I'm run down and need protein, it's my go to.

Jill

Bread and butter pickles are just a little too gooshy and sweet.... I'm 70 and -since wee childhood- have always sliced small crunchy gherkins lengthwise for this staple favorite. x Smooth PB and crunchy pickle = perfection.
