How to get rid of an old dog crate? ›

Municipal Recycling Programs: Check with your local recycling service to see if they accept the type of plastic or metal in your pet crate. Specialized Recycling Centers: Some centers specialize in specific materials like metals or certain plastics and can handle items that municipal programs might not accept.

Sometimes after years of using your crate, kennel or carrier, no amount of cleaning can get rid of the smell of pet and possibly urine. When it is time to get rid of a dog crate or carrier, it is good to strive to recycle plastic pet crates and cages or donate to shelters if they're still in good condition.

Crates are typically anchored in the cargo area of an SUV or van. Carriers are typically for smaller pets and secured on the rear seat of the vehicle with the latch anchors or seatbelt.

Your dog is at least 1–2 years old.

Once your dog is around 1 or 2, they'll usually mellow out and act well-behaved when you leave them on their own. Let your dog mature out of their energetic puppy phase before you leave them unsupervised.

Know your Dog

If your dog is like most, he loves his crate. It's his den, bed and ultimate safe place. When its time, some dogs can wean off the crate fairly early and easily adjust to following household rules. Most dogs are ready for this around the 6-9 month mark.

If it is a short trip, under 6 hours, then your cat will be just fine staying in the carrier the entire time. If it is a longer trip, especially if it is over a several day period, you may want to let your cat out of the carrier periodically to get a drink of water and use the litter box.

We have found allowing them to sleep in their carrier near you at night, as little ones, can quickly get them to feel that their carrier is their den.

Hard pet carriers are heavy-duty and don't tip over or get damaged easily as small soft pet carriers might. Hand pet carriers are usually more secure because they come with a plastic or metal door, which is nearly impossible for your pet to open and sneak out of.

An outside dog kennel should have items that help keep dogs comfortable, happy, and healthy, such as bedding material, toys, bowl feeders, and fresh, clean water.

However, if your office hours tend to run late, you might need to do more than just lock the cage and go. Dogs can only last so long in a kennel without potty breaks, interaction, and exercise. No dog should ever be left in their crate for longer than 9 hours without breaks, but many dogs' limits may be less.

Do dogs like bigger or smaller kennels? ›

While you want a roomy crate, you don't want one that's too large. This could encourage your dog to eliminate within the crate because they can sit away from the mess.

Most experts recommend crate training for puppies until they are reliably house-trained, which typically occurs around 6 to 12 months of age. As a puppy matures and gains better bladder and bowel control, you can gradually extend the time they spend outside the crate.

My preference is to allow your dog to sleep out of a crate around 4-5 months and to be free completely before a year. Your dog should be housetrained; which means you know how long your dog can hold his bladder and he knows how to ask to go outside to go.

If so, your pet may be suffering from Caged Dog Syndrome. This is a condition in which dogs develop behavior problems due to spending too much time in a confined space. While it is not a medical condition, it can still have serious repercussions for a dog's emotional and physical health.
