What Happened at Santander Bank?

On May 29, 2024, Santander Group filed a data breach notice with the Attorney General of Vermont after discovering that an unauthorized actor accessed and removed sensitive information from the company’s IT network.

In their notice Santander explains that the data security incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access US-based employees’ sensitive information, which includes their name, bank account information, and Social Security numbers.

After an initial investigation, Santander began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who may have had their data compromised in the attack. If you received a notification letter from the bank, it is important to understand that you may be an increased risk of fraud and identity theft.

More details on the incident are expected in the coming days, but the breach is believed to have originated from an attack on the Snowflake cloud environment, which may be impacted hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide.

A well-known threat actor called ShinyHunters claims to be in possession of the data and is apparently selling a huge lot of Santander Bank data, including information for 30 million customers and employees. ShinyHunters has also claimed the Ticketmaster data breach (also Snowflake related) impacting 560 million people. Ticketmaster has not confirmed whether a data breach occurred, and the hackers responded, “I don’t care if they don’t admit. I’m just selling,” ShinyHunters told reporters.

Santander Bank is part of Banco Santander, a global financial institution with a U.S. headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. Santander Bank employs more than 17,200 people.
