"I'm encouraged by how the people in this community care about one another," Fox said. Roberta Knapp, of Knapp Insurance in Helena, said she sees those who come into her office to buy vehicle insurance and have no existing coverage. This worries her. That some of these clients drink and drive is a concern for her as well.

"It's not OK, and it's not OK to not have insurance," she said. The attorney general explained his involvement in the discussions, saying "this is my home. This is my community. Most of my family and friends do live here." Helena has had an alcohol problem for a long time, said Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Drew Knapp, who is not related to Roberta Knapp.

"There is a huge alcohol problem in Lewis and Clark County, whether people want to admit it or not," said the patrolman, IR Daily Planner 23THURSDAY Lewis Street Pantry senior distribution 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for individuals whose last names end in M-Z. Each year, area law enforcement officers arrest between 450 and 500 people for drunken driving, he said.

Getting people involved in addressing alcohol use and driving is a problem, he said, noting that the small group discussing impaired driving had the fewest number of the three groups. MHP Sgt. Jay Nelson was a part of the group, too, and a fifth -generation resident of Lewis and Clark County. He praised the Town Pump chain of stores for its alcohol training for its employees. The convenience stores sell beer and wine.

"Town Pump does a great job when it comes to that type of work," Nelson said. Strategies developed by the impaired driving focus group called for shifting how social norms are viewed and instead of noting that one in four drinks and drives, for example, to say that three out of four don't engage in this behavior. Requiring driver training for those convicted of DUI was another of the group's suggestions, as 3663 or 447-1680 'Mother Gleim: Iron Fisted 'Queen of Missoula's Red Light District'" talk 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May auditorium 'Why We Give to Charities' talk Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:15 Thursday, May for non-members and $35 for members, service charges not included. Educating the public on the volume of alcohol that's contained in some co*cktails was also noted. The group saw value in seeking support from the city of Helena to include information in monthly water bills, as did the focus group looking at accidents involving pedestrians and bicycles. Another way to heighten awareness of pedestrians and bicyclists on roads was to use billboards, placards on city buses and use other cars to carry the message, a representative of that group said.

A local seatbelt ordinance was also mentioned as a way to reduce injuries in crashes. Efforts to educate pedestrians to look for traffic before stepping into a street was noted by the member of a focus group too. The outcome of the suggestions, said the Transportation Department's Langve-Davis, will be determined by how the plan implemented and "the success of this really hinges on the participation of the community of Helena." downstairs, 512 or visit on facebook.
