What chocolate is surprisingly vegan? ›

This German chocolate company has a dedicated vegan category on its website these days, but it's been making dairy-free chocolate for years without the label. The Salted Caramel; Roasted Peanut; Crunchy Whole Hazelnuts; and Vegan Smooth are just a few of its vegan offerings.

While dark chocolate is usually vegan-friendly, milk and white chocolate typically are not. Milk Chocolate, as the name implies, contains dairy, making it not vegan, unless it is made with a nondairy milk like oat milk or almond milk. White Chocolate also frequently contains dairy products.

Vegan chocolates are definitively chocolate. They are made from the same cacao beans, and they only become “non-vegan” when animal products such as dairy, butter or honey are added. Vegan chocolates are crafted with plant-based ingredients such as soy milk or maple syrup.

Contrary to popular belief, vegan chocolate is actually considered healthier than traditional chocolate. It's lower in sugar and calories, and it contains more antioxidants. Plus, there are so many different varieties of vegan chocolate available that you're sure to find one you love.

While this new vegan option from Ghirardelli is promising, there is currently only one other vegan option available. The Intense Dark 72% Cacao Dark Chocolate is fully plant-based. It is available as a bar or individual squares.

The range includes decadent dark chocolate, smooth vegan-friendly chocolate and indulgent Hot Chocolate for those cold winter nights.

Unfortunately, the traditional Ferrero Rocher aren't suitable for vegans as they contain both dairy-based milk and butter. However, it is possible to make your own plant-based version.

Some manufacturers may add ingredients like skimmed milk powder, anhydrous milk solids, milk fat, milk emulsifiers and other dairy products to their dark chocolate – those following a vegan lifestyle should look out for these ingredients on the label.

Chocolate is made using cacao beans which are found on cacao trees (Theobroma cacao), meaning chocolate in its 'raw form' is vegan friendly as it's a plant-based food. To make chocolate products such as bars, truffles, cakes etc. animal and dairy ingredients are often added such as milk products, butter and eggs.

Many vegans refer to Oreos as “accidentally vegan,” meaning they don't contain animal products — but they weren't created to be a specifically vegan treat. Oreos do not contain milk, eggs, or any other animal-derived products, so they are technically vegan in that sense.

White chocolate not only has more saturated fat than any other type of chocolate, but lacks the healthy phytochemicals found in cocoa and dark chocolate.

Why is vegan chocolate so expensive? The reason why vegan bars are expensive is that they have smaller operations and use higher-quality ingredients compared to other non-vegan chocolate production. You can always make your own vegan options snack bar that doesn't use animal products.

To know if chocolate is vegan, check labels for certified-organic cane sugar, raw cane sugar, or sugar made from plant sources like beets or monk fruit. No animal honey, too.
