Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was once again the star of the show as his team defeated the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII to win a second consecutive championship and a third in five years. After picking up his third Super Bowl MVP award in four appearances, serious conversations are now being had as to whether the Texan, who only started playing pro football in 2017, could surpass the achievements of NFL legend Tom Brady, who won seven rings and five Super Bowl MVPs in a 20-year career.

Mahomes bites back at Chiefs’ critics

The Chiefs’ success this year has come despite widespread belief the team was weaker than last, when they also ended the season as champions. Speaking on the CBS broadcast immediately after the game, Mahomes sought to bite back at critics who didn’t believe they would join the back-to-back winners’ club: “I just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. Just know that.”

Later, in a post-game press conference, the 28 year old confessed the season hadn’t gone completely smoothly but that the team had got through it by sticking together as much as possible.

“Listen, I mean battling through the adversity that we battled through this year…guys staying with the process, keeping believing….you never know how it’s going to happen. To be able to go play three great teams to get to this game and play another great team and win all those games… it was a true road in the playoffs and we were able to come through and be Super Bowl champs.”

Praise for “best in the world” coach Reid

The quarterback had special praise for head coach Andy Reid, who he called “the best coach of all time” after he also won his third Super Bowl.

“He’s one of the best coaches of all time. I believe he’s the best coach of all time. I mean, I know he doesn’t have the trophies yet and I have a lot of respect for some of those great coaches. But the way he’s been able to navigate every single team he has, continue to have success no matter where he’s at…

“For me, he brings out the best in me because he lets me be me. That’s important. He doesn’t try to make me anyone else. I don’t think I’d be the quarterback I am if I didn’t have coach Reid being my head coach. Other than that, he wants you to be the best person you can be and that’s something I think is truly special.”

“Extreme joy” after Chiefs win over the 49ers

Finally, Mahomes revealed exactly he felt the moment the victory over the 49ers was confirmed.

“I can’t even explain what was going through my mind. Just extreme joy. I didn’t even know where to go. It’s so exciting, I’m so proud of the team, so proud of the guys. To battle to the very end, that was a microcosm of our season. I said it, and everybody came together to get the win.”

After defeating the Eagles in Phoenix last year, the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Las Vegas to become the eighth team to win consecutive Super Bowls. The will now be hoping to be become the first franchise in history to make it three in a row in the 2024 season.
