Carbon neutrality is an ultimate goal for us. We are not sure about how we could get there, but we will keep working on it. It is quite heartening that recycling reduces carbon footprint by about 80% to begin with. Not sure if virgin polymers will ever get close to it even if they fully switch to renewable electricity.With 5.2 billion tons of total CO2 to be removed, our 0.01% potential contribution is perhaps no big feat. Yet a step in the right direction considering that plastics contribute about 5% of the total. To get from A to Z, there are 26 steps in between.

We all know what causes greenhouse emissions… Fossil fuel-based household heating systems. Transportation like cars and aeroplanes. Manufacturing and industrial processes. But this article caught my eye because it puts a spotlight on the impact of plastic on climate change – and it’s massive.We all know that plastic, particularly single use plastic, is bad for the environment. But we mainly think of this in terms of the issues with recycling and the inability of plastic to decompose. But some of the assertions in this article make startling reading.“Plastic warms the planet almost twice as much as aviation”.“Plastics account for 3.8% of global greenhouse gas emissions”. “If it were a country, the “Plastic Kingdom” would be the fifth-highest emitter in the world”.Wow.The three main reasons plastics are so responsible for greenhouse emissions is the energy required to transport the raw ingredients, the production processes involved, and then the release of chemicals when plastics are incinerated. Which all leads back to reducing our demand for plastic in the first place, then recycling as much as we can. As well as looking at every stage of transporting and manufacturing and switching to lower emission alternatives where possible. As an entrepreneur in the green technology space, I always like to keep an eye on the big picture. Climate change reaches into so many aspects of our lives and we as individuals can only control our little bit. Effective carbon reduction isn't just about emissions - it's also about cost.I see this all the time in the waste & recycling sector, where budgets often drive what #sustainability targets can be achieved.This is the same when it comes to #emissions. The best way to get people on board is to offer net zero strategies that don't cost an arm and a leg, for both private and public sectors.Zero Waste Europe's new study shows the cost and emissions benefits of sorting mixed waste that's leftover after the separation process, compared to sending it directly to incineration with Carbon Capture tech (link in the comments for those interested)! Recorra sees this as essential to Britain's overall #netzero strategy.Wherever we can use systems and technologies that are already in place, we can reduce our emissions much faster while keeping our costs low.
