Growing a Second Flush of Mushrooms (2024)

Did you know that your Mushroom Grow Kit can grow more than one flush of mushrooms? By flush, we mean batch or round of mushrooms. Yes, that means you really can get more bang for your buck!

Growing a Second Flush of Mushrooms (1)

Shiitake Mushroom Grow Kits:

Shiitakes are unique. Second flushes on shiitake blocks require fresh, outdoor air.

  1. If your first flush is during the winter, place your block in a garage or somewhere else cool and dry
  2. Allow the block to dry out while you wait for warmer temperatures
  3. When temperatures are above 30 degrees at night, you can attempt a second flush outside
  4. Soak the grow block in a tub of water for 12 hours, or place it outside during a rainy period
  5. Place block in a shady place outside
  6. Repeat the growing process, treating your block the exact same way you did the first time around. Refer to shiitake grow kit instructions here.

Oyster and Lion's Mane Mushroom Grow Kits:

New mushroom growth usually occurs around the edges of prior growth. If you are struggling to grow a second flush out of the same gash you initially cut, flip the grow block over and make a new gash in the bag.

  1. Continue misting your block multiple times a day. New growth will emerge in 7 - 10 days.
  2. Repeat the growing process, treating your block the exact same way you did the first time around. Refer to Oyster Mushroom grow kit instructions here and Lion's Mane grow kit instructions here.

Pioppino Mushroom Grow Kit:

Pioppino mushroom grow blocks may grow green mold after their first flush. To avoid this, keep your grow block in an area with lots of air flow. If weather permits, grow your second flush of pioppino mushrooms outdoors on your deck to provide plenty of open air.

  1. Continue misting your block multiple times a day. New growth will emerge in 7 - 10 days.
  2. Repeat the growing process, treating your block the exact same way you did the first time around.
  3. Refer to pioppino grow kit instructions here.

    Things to Remember:

    • You can even attempta third flush of mushrooms! Repeat the afforementioned steps after harvesting your second flush.
    • Most grow blocks won't grow as many mushrooms the second or third time around. Each flush you attempt will result in fewer mushrooms.

    Second Fruiting

How do you get a second flush of mushrooms? ›

    Subsequent Flushes

The act of soaking the blocks in cold water by itself is enough of a shock to initiate a second fruiting. Once the blocks are back in the fruiting chamber, all you need to do is make sure the humidity is adequate and there is enough fresh air coming in.

How long to soak substrate for second flush? ›

SOAKING THE SUBSTRATE TO GROW MULTIPLE FLUSHES

There are two ways you can go about this. The first method is true to the name, and simply involves letting your substrate soak in water for 12 hours. Afterwards, you can drain the kit and begin the process anew.

How do you get a second flush of lion's mane? ›

    The Second Flush:

After your first harvest, replace the humidity tent and continue to mist a few times daily. A second Lion's mane will soon grow from the original hole. (Alternatively, you can cut a new hole in the opposite side of the bag, and tape the original hole closed.)

How many times can you reuse a mushroom grow kit? ›

Yes, you can most definitely reuse mushroom grow kits! Mushroom grow kits are generally designed to give you more than one harvest depending on the species of mushroom inside your growing kit. There is enough water nutrition available in the substrate to give you multiple harvests over a period of 2-10 weeks.

How do you yield more mushrooms? ›

If you want to grow more mushrooms simply give yourself more of the three “S's”: spores, substrate, and space. Having more substrate rich with inoculated mycelium will increase organic mass and potentially increase your mushroom production. Keep in mind that you'll need more surface area to accommodate it all.

How do you make mushrooms more digestible? ›

Some mushrooms may contain elements that could cause an upset stomach. These elements are destroyed when you cook your mushrooms. If you have digestive disorders, cooking your mushrooms will make them more digestible.

How long to cook mushrooms to remove toxins? ›

Cooking mushrooms very well (for 1-3 hours) removes virtually all of the hydrazine and most of the agaritine.

How do you clean mushrooms for dehydration? ›

Before you do any dehydrating, you will want to make sure that your mushrooms are clean and properly prepped. Another common mistake people make is that they wash their mushrooms improperly—rather than sticking them under running water, simply wipe them with a damp paper towel.
