I need to know how long a 50 lb. bag of grain feed will last if feeding 4 gallons a day.

You'll need to know how many pounds of feed make a gallon. Was that information given or do you need to go out and buy a gallon of feed and weigh it?

Another way to do this is to determine 4 gallons of grain by filling up a 4 gallon container with the feed and you're done.

But to calculate

you need to know the "bulk density" of the feed grain

ask the question what is the lb/gal value for the feed.

In Marks' Handbook, cereal grains can run from 26 lbs/cubic foot for oats to 48 lbs/cubic foot for wheat. Quite a variation, agree?

check this site out for bulk densities of your feed grain, it will give you a tabulated valuehttp://www.powderandbulk.com/resources/bulk_density/material_bulk_density_chart_k.htm

Now that's just the bulk density value.

To calculate if 50 lb grain bag is enough for 4 gallons/day,

convert your bulk density value (lbs/cubic foot) to (lbs/gal) by dividing the cubic foot value by 7.48 gallons / cubic foot. This will put the value in lbs/gallon terms.

When you have converted it, divide 50 lb by this lbs/gal value.

This will give you the lbs of feed grain equivalent to 4 gallons.

We need to know the density of the grain (that is, how much a given volume of grain weighs). For example, a gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds, so 50 pounds of water is six gallons (50 / 8.33 approx. = 6.002).

In order to solve the problem, you need some similar information about the grain. If they don't say how much a gallon of grain weighs, you need to convert the unit you're given into gallons to find out how much one gallon of grain weighs. Also, depending on what unit of weight you're given, you might have do another conversion to get the number of pounds in one gallon.

Once you've found the number of pounds in one gallon of grain, divide 50 by that number (as in 50 / 8.33 for water) to get the number of gallons in 50 pounds. Finally, divide **that** number by four and you'll have the answer for how long a 50-pound sack will last if you feed four gallons a day.

Not unless it is filled with solid gold. A gallon of water only weighs 8 lbs, so I would imagine shea butter would weigh around 10-15 lbs at the most.

There are a few options here,

1) get an empty 5gallon bucket/barrel

2) scoop your required 4 gallons into the bucket/barrel

3) count number of gallons

or

1) scoop out 1 gallon of feed

2) weigh

3) calculate 50÷x=?

Remembering the old saying a pint weighs as much as a pound, and there are 4 pints in a gallon. That would mean you are using 16 pints or pounds a day. Divide 50 by 16, meaning 3.125 days, I think...Just using general math.

These are two different measurements. One solid - one liquid. If you are going to be feeding animals and emptying the grain into a pail it wont take too long to find out. Or ask at the the feed mill they will know for sure.

you will have to weigh 1 gallon of grain to know how much grain is in 50 lbs to be able to know the answer.

It's impossible to know, since a gallon is a unit of volume and a pound is a unit of mass. How many POUNDS do you feed per day? Divide that into 50.

Well there needs to be more information to your question.... A gallon of grain weighs a different amount than say, a gallon of milk....

Weigh out a gallon and divide it into 50 and you will have your answer.

A pint's a pound the world around. Sixteen ounces=pint, 128 ounces in a gallon. You do the math.

First switch to the metric system so conversion actually makes sense, and then find out the density of the grain.

It depends on what the substance is, e.g. A gallon of gold weighs more than a gallon of water.

a pint's a pound a world around, watch alton brown on food network.

if 2 pints equal a quart and four quarts goes into a gallon, figure it out, my teachers' yelling at me.

It depends entirely on the density of the feed.

But not long.

MAYBE two days.
