When to break up mycelium in all in one bag? ›

After about 4-8 weeks, you should start to see mycelium growing on the substrate. You'll notice the white mycelium growing outward from the point of injection. When the mycelium has grown three to four inches, without opening the bag, carefully break up the colonized substrate and mix it into the uncolonized substrate.

You can tell when mycelium is fully colonized when the entire substrate (such as a jar or a bag) is covered with a dense, white, and fuzzy network of mycelial threads. There should be no visible uncolonized areas or contaminants, and the mycelium should appear healthy and vigorous.

While this can be good, airflow is also important and small enclosed spaces can cause your mushrooms to suffer from lack of oxygen. We recommend placing your grow kit on your kitchen bench, out of direct sunlight.

Some mushrooms will grow inside the bag in interesting ways, notably the Reishi mushroom. In the high CO2 environment of the inside of a bag, the Reishi will grow long and twisted “antlers” instead of the more familiar conk. If you let Reishi grow long enough, it will eventually fruit right through the filter!

Breaking and shaking the grain jar at this point would actually slow down the colonization process as the mycelium would have to re-form its connections.

If your mycelium has completely colonized the substrate, begins to get denser, and forms white blobs or bumps, you know the pinning process is beginning. These bumps or hyphal knots continue to grow from the surface of the substrate and develop into tiny matchstick-like primordia or mushroom pins.

Once your grain is between 50-80% colonized (white) break up the colonized grain thoroughly, and begin mixing into the substrate layer. It may help to lay the bag flat on its side and roll the material to mix.
