Last week, leaders of the University of South Florida's military connected student organizations and Veteran Alumni Association met to plan activities for the Fall semester. The planning meeting included leadership from four student organizations, our vibrant alumni group, and staff advisors: Student Veterans of America chapter:Ryan PocaigueSALUTE Veterans Honor Society: Logan Engle and Justin PearlUSF Veteran Alumni Association:Todd Post and Zachary Fitzgerald Student Veteran Organization, St. Pete campus: Zackery MoralesStudent Veterans Association, Sarasota-Manatee: Ashlie CruzSupporting the conversation were staff from all three USF campuses: Wayne N. Taylor, Ed.D. and Dennis Mont'Ros MFA from our Tampa campus, Carlos Moreira, M.B.A. of our Sarasota-Manatee campus, and Todd Post from the St. Petersburg campus. We reviewed upcoming events, collaboration opportunities, and collective goals to make the most of our efforts.A big topic was the 2024 Student Veterans of America National Conference.“NatCon” is the most impactful event a student veteran can attend. The next one will be held in Nashville this coming January. There’s no better one-stop shop to get information on careers, legislative advocacy, benefits, and vets in higher education. NatCon is also a massive #networking opportunity. The event brings together student vets from across the country, as well as prominent guest speakers that included last year the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, The Secretary of Education, and award-winning journalist Sebastian Junger. Not to mention the huge expo of veteran-friendly businesses, and a photo booth for free professional headshots.Getting a strong contingent of students there won't be easy. In fact, it will be almost impossible without teamwork. By combining talent and energy, these orgs will maximize fundraising to best prepare USF military connected students for the brightest futures. We're proud of these leaders for joining forces toward a very important cause.Go Bulls! 🤘 #leadership #studentveterans #teamwork#collaboration

Cincinnati State receives award designation as military-friendly.Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) Chancellor Randy Gardner today named the latest group of Ohio colleges and universities designated as Collegiate Purple Star campuses for their efforts to support students with military backgrounds. This latest group of five Collegiate Purple Star campuses increases to 51 the number of schools that have earned the designation since 2022.Ohio was the first state in the nation to offer these designations, which advance the work already done by Ohio’s PreK-12 school system to create the Purple Star designation for those schools that worked to become military friendly. The campuses receiving the latest Collegiate Purple Star designation are:Central Ohio Technical CollegeCincinnati State Technical and Community CollegeNorth Central State CollegeNortheast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED)University of Northwestern OhioColleges and universities in Ohio are offered the opportunity to apply for the Collegiate Purple Star designation. The designations are determined by a Collegiate Purple Star Advisory Committee appointed by the Chancellor and composed of members from organizations that include but aren’t limited to ODHE, the Ohio Veterans Education Council (with representation from two-year colleges, four-year universities, and independent institutions), the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department, and the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission K-12 Purple Star Committee.#CincyState #CincyStateCareerCenter #CollegiatePurpleStar #militaryfriendly

Tonight is a very special night - Graduation. So many wonderful students are going to walk across the stage and receive acknowledgement for their years of dedication focused on preparation for the workforce or "adulthood." As a professor, it is my favorite event of the year.I often hear lamentations regarding "this generation" and the comments are not always positive. Let me share a few of the many fine qualities that define the graduates of 2023 (as I have had a bit of experience over the past year):* Flexibility - Very few college students have endured over 2 years of a pandemic, but these fine graduates have. More importantly, they navigated the difficulty of a quick switch to online learning and continued to persevere. So, this group of graduates can handle anything that life will bring and rise to any occasion.* Curiosity - I love being challenged in the classroom and this generation respectfully questions doctrines and theories versus passively accepts our (professors) word as the truth. This is a trait that is going to make the world a better place.* Incredible Work Ethic - Most of my students worked while going to school and it did not affect their performance. Many of them worked night shifts but you would never know it as they remained engaged and interested in learning.* Critical Thinking - The application of the learning is where I have seen this skill materialize. This fabulous generation can quickly absorb new information and apply it in no time. * Technical Skills - This is where we professors have had to adapt our plans. In planning an activity leveraging technology, my students take 1/2 the time I have planned for it as they are so capable and proficient with all software.* Creativity - In assignments, the more creativity requested, the more I get. This semester was no exception with one student even creating an incredible rap song for his final submission and it was perfect.* Kindness - This generation openly embraces that people around them are struggling. They are open and compassionate with mental health challenges, which will serve the evolving workforce well for generations to come.* Equity-Minded - They welcome diversity in all ways and this has been such a joy to witness. Not only do they invite all to the party, they dance with all!* Activists - They care deeply about the future of the world as a whole and actively engage in charities, campaigns, and efforts that are meaningful to them. This list is not exhaustive by any means and I welcome my colleagues to add to it. Here is what I know for sure: We are in good hands with this generation. I am privileged to teach them a few things regarding franchising and collaboration/negotiation; however, they will serve us well. Let's all cheer from the sidelines.
