Throughout the centuries, Santander has been named the “Liverpool of Spain”, as its port became a crossroads of products imported from the colonies and traded with the New World.

Santander has two slogans. 'Value From Ideas' is a global endline devised at the giant bank's Madrid HQ and seldom used here. In the UK, we have 'Driven to do better'. Created with ad agency WCRS, the slogan was introduced in point of sale materials last year and takes pride of place in Santander's UK advertising.

Santander UK is a large retail and commercial bank based in the UK and a wholly-owned subsidiary of the major global bank Banco Santander.

Tourism and sights

The bars and restaurants of the old town are popular with tourists, as well as the El Sardinero beach a couple of kilometres away. The Cathedral of Santander: The lower temple, called "cripta del Cristo" was built around 1200 on other earlier Roman buildings.

Established in Miami in 1979, Banco Santander International offers holistic private banking and investment services to high-net-worth individuals and non-U.S. residents, with a focus on Latin America.

Sovereign Bank was rebranded as Santander Bank on October 17, 2013; the stadium, arena, and performing arts center for which it has naming rights were also rebranded.

The name Santander traces its roots back to the Spanish language and specifically the city of Santander in northern Spain. The name itself is derived from the Latin word Sancti Emeterii, which refers to the Saint Emeterius, a patron saint of the city.
